The Housing Counselor is a full-time, on-site role based in Eatonville, Orange County, FL. This role provides one-on-one and group housing counseling to clients on topics such as pre- and post-purchase homeownership, foreclosure prevention, rental counseling, and credit improvement.
The Housing Counselor conducts client intake and assessments, develops individualized action plans, and documents all services in accordance with HUD and organizational guidelines. Responsibilities include delivering financial education workshops, maintaining accurate case files, preparing reports, and coordinating referrals to community partners, lenders, and real estate professionals. The role also involves staying current with housing regulations, program requirements, and local resources to ensure clients receive accurate, timely guidance.
Qualifications
Certified Housing Counselor credentials Required; and a strong foundation in Housing Counseling principles and practices.
Knowledge of U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) regulations, guidelines, and reporting requirements relevant to housing counseling programs.
Experience supporting clients facing Foreclosures, including loss mitigation options, communication with servicers, and development of sustainable action plans.
Proficiency in personal Budgeting, credit management, and basic financial education to help clients build long-term financial stability.
Strong interviewing, counseling, and case management skills, with the ability to work with diverse populations in a respectful, trauma-informed, and culturally sensitive manner.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present workshops and explain complex information in clear, accessible language.
Organizational and time-management skills, with attention to detail in documentation, data entry, and compliance with HUD and agency standards.
Proficiency with standard Microsoft Office software and client management databases; ability to learn new systems as required.
Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in social work, counseling, finance, or related field ideal.
Preferred
Bilingual in English and Spanish, Haitian Creole, or Portuguese a strong plus
Reverse mortgage (HECM) counseling certification ideal
Familiarity with HUD-compliant case management systems
