Salary Range: $17.69 To 31.77 Hourly

Summary Purpose for the Position

Provide rental, pre and post purchase counseling to low to moderate-income households involved in the PathStone Housing Counseling program. Prepare and present workshops and classes in areas related to rental housing, homeownership, and post closing counseling/workshops. One on one counseling is also provided to each household.

Requirements (Education, Experience, Certification, Knowledge, Skill)

Associates Degree in related field or at least 3 years experience housing counseling related occupation (mortgage lender, non-profit developer, housing counselor etc.)

Proficiency in technical and interpersonal skills necessary for working with families on personal financial matters. 

Ability to plan and lead workshops and classes.  

NCHEC certification in Rental Housing Counseling, Foreclosure Prevention or Pre-Purchase Education and Homeownership Counseling is required within 18 months of hire must also pass the test for HUD Housing Counseling Certification within 1 year of hire.  

Must be trained and use required client data management system.  

Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred.

Position Responsibilities

Counselor must provide all the basic material and relate it to the householder’s particular situation.

Strong customer service skills

Must be able to review regulations, interpret program information and produce demographic and narrative reports.

Must be capable of interpreting financial information for the tenant, homeowner, buyer and lenders.

Counselor will have information pertaining to personal finances.

Must have knowledge of grants programs such as HOME, AHC, CDBG, FHLB, HAF, LAEP etc.

Counselor will report to Director of Homeownership Programs but will be responsible for daily decisions regarding their own work and client related interactions.

Has flexibility within the scope of the job, any changes must be discussed with Director.   

Position follows prescribed steps, but must make alterations depending upon situations.

Prepares families for mortgages and grants, prevent eviction or foreclosure and provides overall financial wellness coaching.  Advises families of housing options suitable to their needs.   

Determines which steps/methods/procedures among several prescribed options are required to fulfill an identified project, program, policy or management objective.

Counselor will be responsible for developing formal training materials and present them to program participants and external groups. Includes budget development for class training as well as assisting families develop a personal budget and savings plan.

Position is responsible for all relevant program compliance within the Housing Counseling program.

The position includes representing PathStone at meetings, conferences and other relevant forums concerned with issues affecting the operation of housing counseling programs.

Working Conditions/Environment

Requires flexible hours to meet the needs of tenants, potential homebuyers, and current homeowners, including evenings and weekend availability.  

This position requires a minimal amount of travel.  

Must receive required Counseling Certification by attending 2-3 NeighborWorks America Training Institutes and then travel for required continuing education as needed.

Virtual education will also be acceptable if available.

Transportation Requirement:

Position requires automobile, driver’s license and insurance.
