Financial and Housing Counselor



The financial counselor is responsible for counseling individuals who are struggling with their financial goals. They will encourage, educate, and help clients improve their financial wellness with detailed action plans and goals set during the counseling session. The financial counselor will be understanding, yet firm while providing direction without judgement.

SUPERVISED BY: Office Manager/Executive Director

QUALIFICATIONS: High School Diploma or GED required. Experience in finance, counseling and/or two to five years’ experience in a social economic field is preferred. Must have excellent oral skills. Must have skills in interviewing, and evaluating stressful situations.
Must have good communication skills while demonstrating the ability to work well under pressure. Must have a pleasant phone voice. Should be willing to travel to all present and future satellite locations and work occasional non-traditional business hours. Will be responsible for attending conferences and workshops for furthering education, sometimes outside of the Mid-Ohio Valley. Should have good computer skills, with ability to work with new software programs as necessary. Must be able to maintain complete confidence and work well with others on team related projects.


Obtain and keep Financial Counseling and HUD certifications.
Interview individuals/families in order to determine financial needs.
Set up debt management plan for those overwhelmed with debt.
Contact and communicate with creditors for special arrangements and other correspondence.
Assist homeowners/renters with delinquent housing issues.
Use coaching approach when addressing clients’ goals while developing a workable budget and a comprehensive action plan.
Pre-purchase counseling for potential homebuyer
Reverse Mortgage/Home Equity Conversion Mortgage (HECM) counseling
Rental and Homelessness counseling
Provide credit report reviews and credit building advice.
Educate client in tracking expenses.
Provide account review sessions for current clients.
Manage a caseload of financial and housing counseling clients.
Schedule accounts for disbursement to creditors.
Mail/Email client payment adjustment letter, maintain copy for their files.
Research returned payments from creditors for manual and electronic payments
Counsel client on option of bankruptcy and other alternatives
Facilitate bankruptcy, financial, credit, and housing education programs,
Build relationships with lenders, creditors, realtors, and other professionals to develop referral sources.
Conduct or attend community outreach events.
Contact delinquent clients by mail or phone
Return phone calls from clients/creditors on a timely basis
Receive, organize, and post all creditor balances based on client statements
Receive client payments and write receipts when necessary
Review accounts and run documentation in preparation for closing files
Attend meetings, workshops, and seminars as necessary; out-of-town travel may be required.
Ensure client satisfaction throughout all transactions and by Performance and Quality Improvement (PQI) Practices
Work with management to build grant submissions.
Other duties as assigned.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $12.00 – $13.00 per hour
