MHANY Management, Inc. (“MHANY”), a mutual housing association, is a not-for-profit community and housing development organization that owns and manages over 3,000 affordable rental apartments throughout New York City and in Patterson, New Jersey. Position Overview

MHANY’S counseling team manages our HUD certified First Time Homebuyer, Delinquency, and Foreclosure Prevention Education and Counseling Program. The work involves preparing people for home ownership and helping them keep and stay in their homes. The successful candidate must believe in the MHANY core values. MHANY provides necessary support and training to pass the HUD exam.

Responsibilities

Home Ownership Counseling & Assessment:

  • Provide applicants with an overview of the home buying & foreclosure prevention process and timeline; the homeowner’s rights and responsibilities; and potential foreclosure scams
  • Review applicant’s financial records for high cost credit cards, predatory loans, unnecessary expenses, and discretionary expenses
  • Analyze applicant information, undertake economic feasibility and assess to present options to first time homeownership or home preservation applicants
  • Generate a financial action plan that accurately and clearly outlines the steps applicant needs to take to qualify for a loan, a work out plan, loan modification, or other outcome
  • Communicate with lenders on behalf of applicants and negotiate on behalf of applicant
  • Steward each applicant through the entire process to a successful outcome

Report:

  • Maintain detailed statistics on all applicant interactions in order to report accurately to city, state and federal agencies and other partners as required
  • Submit time sheets, lender referrals forms, and any other required forms to the regional supervisor on a timely basis

Market:

  • Conduct community outreach and marketing for foreclosure prevention and homeowner counseling; including conducting group intakes, presenting home buying seminars, predatory lending, budget and credit workshops; and providing accurate and clear information to the intended audience

Intake:

  • Meet applicants seeking home-ownership related services; explain the basic elements of the purchasing, refinancing or loss mitigation processes and other programs available

Collate Documents:

  • Assist applicants with assembling financial documentation required for households participating in housing counseling program.
  • Create and maintain an up-to-date applicant file for each household with required documentation and forms in the proper order; and monitor the applicant’s progress
  • Work with Salesforce/Compass CMS or other data reporting system used by MHANY to maintain its applicant records for home counseling reporting

Skills and Qualifications

  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
  • Two years of college education
  • At least two years equivalent work experience in the area of homeownership counseling
  • HUD Certified Housing Counselor (preferred)
  • Demonstrable experience working in affordable housing residential and/or housing counseling
  • Ability to work flexible and/or extended hours
  • Willingness to travel throughout NYC boroughs & Long Island
  • Community based non-profit experience highly preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills including ability to communicate with various stakeholders which include applicants, bank officers, and program funders
  • Manage and track status of multiple applicant cases in assigned portfolio
  • Highly organized and detail orientated with the ability to multitask and work well with minimal supervision
  • Have exceptional customer service and phone skills
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment and maintain a positive attitude
  • Able to quickly assess a situation, communicate timely and effectively with colleagues, supervisors, and/or leadership in order to take the necessary steps to implement the work in an expeditious fashion

Location

This position is based in Brooklyn, NY and requires travel throughout New York City.

Pay: $50,000.00 – $60,000.00 per year
